Split Pea Soup

200gr split peas
500gr stewing beef, cut into small pieces (optional)
2 small onions finely chopped
3 carrots diced
150gr sliced celery and stalks
1 leek sliced
2 small potatoes diced
freshly ground black pepper
salt to taste
2 cloves
2 all spice
2 peppercorns
5ml crushed garlic
10ml flour to thicken soup
water as required
Discard any small stones and blemished split peas. Wash and soak for several hours. Boil until soft.
Add oil in a saucepan and fry onion. Add chopped vegetables and continue frying.
Add flour and then add the contents of the pan to the cooked split peas. Add spices and if necessary some water and cook until thick and creamy.
Season well.

Serve with fresh crispy white bread
